Where it came from
Released in 2018 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the LEGO minifigure, Series 18 marked a departure from the traditional themes of the Collectible Minifigures line. Rather than focusing on a specific narrative or pop culture licensing, the series was designed as a festive party celebration, featuring characters dressed in elaborate costume-themed outfits like a dragon suit guy, a cactus girl, and a birthday cake guy.
The series is notable for the inclusion of a rare Classic Policeman minifigure, a direct tribute to the 1978 original set 600. The design team aimed to balance nostalgia for long-time enthusiasts with playful, colorful characters that appealed to younger builders. Upon release, the series was well-received for its celebratory spirit and the high level of detail in the costume molds, which pushed the creative boundaries of what could be achieved with the standard minifigure silhouette.
