Where it came from
Luigi's Italian Place, set number 5818-1, was released as part of the LEGO Duplo Cars theme in 2011. The set was designed to tie into the 2011 Disney-Pixar film Cars 2, capturing the charming automotive-themed setting of Radiator Springs where Luigi operates his tire shop. Its design features the chunky, toddler-friendly construction characteristic of the Duplo line, utilizing larger bricks to ensure safety and ease of use for the target demographic of preschool-aged children.
The set includes a Duplo-scale version of Luigi, the yellow Fiat 500 character, and a tire-related shop structure that allows children to recreate scenes from the film franchise. As part of a licensed series, the design team focused on translating the distinct aesthetic of the Cars characters into the simplified, rounded geometry of the Duplo system. While it remains a niche collectible within the broader Cars and Duplo secondary markets, it is frequently cited by fans of the theme as a notable representation of the Radiator Springs expansion sets.
