Where it came from
The Big Bentley set, released in 2011, was part of the Lego Duplo Cars 2 collection, coinciding with the theatrical release of the Disney-Pixar film. It was designed to help younger children build large-scale structures while incorporating popular characters from the movie franchise into their play experience. The set sought to recreate the iconic London landmark featured in the film, rendered with the simplified, oversized brick geometry characteristic of the Duplo line to accommodate the motor skills of its target preschool audience.
The design team focused on balancing the architectural silhouette of the clock tower with the functional needs of a playset, integrating a buildable version of the character Finn McMissile alongside the main structure. Upon its release, it was well-received by parents and educators as a tactile, engaging way to introduce narrative play through construction. It remains a notable example of Lego's strategy of aligning licensed intellectual properties with their toddler-focused building systems to foster early developmental play.
