Where it came from
The Duplo Nursery Furniture set, designated 028-1, was released by the LEGO Group in 1978 as part of the early expansion of the Duplo product line. Designed specifically for younger children, these sets were crafted with larger, safer bricks that were fully compatible with standard LEGO bricks while remaining robust enough for toddler play. The aesthetic of this era emphasized primary colors and simplified shapes, reflecting the company’s pedagogical approach to developing fine motor skills and spatial awareness in early childhood.
The set was conceived during a period when the LEGO Group was aggressively distinguishing Duplo as a distinct brand within their portfolio. By focusing on domestic and caregiving themes, the designers aimed to mirror the everyday environments familiar to young children. Upon its release, the set was well-received by parents and educators alike for its durability and its role in bridging the gap between basic tactile blocks and the more complex building systems that would follow as the child matured.
