Where it came from
The LEGO Police Car, set 600-2, was released in 1978 as part of the early Legoland town series. This era marked a significant evolution for the brand, as it introduced the modern minifigure with movable arms and legs, allowing children to populate their brick-built environments for the first time. The set was designed to be a simple, accessible vehicle that complemented the expanding town theme, reflecting the blocky, minimalist aesthetic that defined LEGO design during the late 1970s.
Jens Nygaard Knudsen, the designer who famously conceptualized the classic minifigure, was instrumental in developing the play systems that made sets like 600-2 possible. By providing a standard vehicle chassis and a dedicated officer figure, the set aimed to encourage open-ended roleplay. Upon its release, it was well-received by the consumer market as an essential foundational piece, helping to establish the enduring popularity of emergency service vehicles within the LEGO catalog.
