Where it came from
Released in 1999, the LEGO Duplo Racing Team set 2599-1 emerged during a period when the brand was expanding its reach into thematic play sets designed for toddlers. The set was created to introduce young children to the concept of competitive sports through simplified, chunky vehicle designs that were easy for small hands to manipulate and combine. It reflects the era's focus on primary colors and durable, oversized plastic components intended to foster early motor skill development.
The design of the set focuses on basic construction, featuring a race car, a driver figure, and pit-crew elements meant to spark imaginative storytelling. By stripping away complex mechanics in favor of modularity, the design team prioritized safety and accessibility, ensuring the pieces remained compatible with the wider Duplo ecosystem. The set was received as a straightforward, utilitarian offering that successfully bridged the gap between basic brick play and character-driven scenarios.
