Where it came from
Released in 2017 as part of the LEGO City Coast Guard subtheme, Sailboat Rescue (60168) was designed to expand the popular maritime-themed sets that frequently appear in the City lineup. This set captures a mid-ocean rescue scenario, featuring a sturdy coast guard boat equipped with a drop-down motor and a sailboat that can be split into two pieces to simulate a shipwreck, encouraging interactive and narrative play for younger builders.
The design emphasizes playability, prioritizing structural durability and the inclusion of specialized rescue equipment like life preservers and a small buoy. It fits within the established design language of the 2017 Coast Guard series, which moved toward a more functional, rugged aesthetic for watercraft. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the theme for its effective use of simple mechanisms to create a realistic disaster-and-rescue play pattern.
