Where it came from
The Samurai Swordsman, set 6013-1, was released in 1998 as part of an experimental line of Japanese-inspired building sets. Produced during a period when the manufacturer was exploring diverse cultural themes beyond their traditional castle and space motifs, the set was intended to offer a compact, character-focused building experience that captured the stoic aesthetic of historical samurai warriors.
The design of the figure reflects the era's transition toward more detailed minifigure printing and specialized gear. By incorporating custom molded elements like the iconic helmet and katana, the designers aimed to balance playability with historical iconography. While the set was a niche release compared to the company's major licensed franchises, it remains a notable example of the creative freedom exercised by designers in the late nineties.
