Where it came from
Released in 2008 as part of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars sub-theme, the Separatist Spider Droid (7681) was designed to capture the tactical diversity of the Separatist droid army. The set was created to coincide with the premiere of the animated series, aiming to replicate the distinct tripod-legged configuration of the DSD1 dwarf spider droid seen in both the film and the accompanying show.
The design focused on technical articulation, featuring flick-fire missiles and poseable legs that mimicked the mechanical locomotion of the screen-accurate counterpart. Upon its release, it was noted for being one of the more accessible entries in the Clone Wars launch wave, praised by collectors for the inclusion of specialized minifigures like the Clone Trooper and the unique Super Battle Droid variants.
