Where it came from
Released in 2008 as part of a collaborative promotion between the LEGO Group and Lucasfilm, the Shanghai Chase set was designed to capture the high-speed rickshaw pursuit scene from the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The set was engineered to translate the chaotic energy of the chase sequence into a compact, play-oriented build, featuring two distinct rickshaws and iconic minifigures of Indiana Jones, Mutt Williams, and Irina Spalko.
The design focused on the mechanical contrast between the film's characters, utilizing printed tiles and specific color palettes to distinguish the vehicles. While the Indiana Jones theme was generally well-received for its nostalgic appeal and detailed character figures, the Shanghai Chase set is often highlighted by enthusiasts for its unique inclusion of the rickshaw build style, which remains a relatively rare construction technique within the broader LEGO portfolio.
