Where it came from
Released in early 2016 as part of the LEGO Ninjago 'Skybound' wave, the Sky Shark (set 70601) was designed to reflect the steampunk-inspired aesthetic of the season's primary antagonists, the Sky Pirates. The set features a flying pirate vessel characterized by its shark-like silhouette, equipped with a spinning propeller, drop-down bombs, and a cockpit to house the Djinn blade-wielding pilot.
The design emphasizes a rugged, mechanical look, diverging from the traditional ninjutsu aesthetic of the Ninjago line to establish the aerial threat posed by Nadakhan’s crew. It was received by the building community as a creative addition to the sub-theme, praised for its unique shape and the inclusion of well-detailed minifigures, including the protagonist Lloyd and the pirate villain Flintlocke.
