Where it came from
The Super Set (088-1) was released by LEGO in 1978, a pivotal year that marked the debut of the modern minifigure and the transition toward the company's modular system of play. Designed to provide a comprehensive starter experience for children, this set served as a practical introduction to the evolving city theme, offering a curated selection of elements that encouraged creative building beyond the restrictive model-specific instructions common in earlier years.
The set reflects the minimalist, primary-color aesthetic characteristic of late 1970s LEGO design. By focusing on essential architectural components and a small workforce of early minifigures, the collection allowed builders to construct basic structures and street scenes. It was well-received by consumers for its versatility and remains a notable artifact of the era, representing the strategic shift toward open-ended play that would define the brand's identity for decades to follow.
