Where it came from
Released in 1999, the Temple of Gloom was part of a brief series of sets intended to capture the aesthetic of adventure-themed archeology and exploration. Developed during a period when the company was experimenting with standalone narratives outside of their primary established themes, the set focused on a trap-laden structure meant to challenge miniature figures navigating a jungle environment.
The design of the set leaned into a pulp-adventure style, utilizing specialized molded pieces and unique character headgear to convey a sense of peril and discovery. While the set did not spark a long-running sub-theme, it is remembered by enthusiasts for its distinct color palette and the inclusion of specific interactive play features, such as moving floor plates and hidden compartments, which were sophisticated for a set of its size at the time.
