Where it came from
Released by the LEGO Group in 2023, the Royal Clamshell set was designed as a display-oriented build to commemorate the live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid. The set features a detailed, buildable clamshell structure that opens to reveal distinct environments inspired by the film, including King Triton’s throne room, Ariel’s grotto, and Ursula’s lair. It was intended to appeal to adult fans of LEGO who prioritize decorative aesthetics and architectural detail over traditional play functions, incorporating intricate elements such as golden clamshells and thematic accessories.
The design process focused on balancing the organic shapes of an underwater environment with the rigid, interlocking nature of LEGO bricks. By utilizing a variety of translucent and pearlescent pieces, the designers aimed to capture the ethereal, shimmering quality of the ocean setting. Upon release, the set was noted by reviewers for its unique display presence and its departure from the more common minifigure-scaled playsets, marking a significant entry in the company's broader line of cinematic-inspired collectibles.
