Where it came from
Released in 2008 as part of the LEGO Exo-Force line, Thunder, set 7157, emerged during the final wave of a theme that signaled a bold departure for the company. The design, spearheaded by LEGO's internal creative teams, drew heavily on Japanese anime aesthetics, featuring a color palette dominated by bold, aggressive reds and industrial greys to distinguish it from the more traditional space themes of the era.
This specific mech, piloted by the character Ryo, was conceived to provide a heavy-duty combat machine for the human resistance against the robotic army. While Exo-Force was a short-lived experiment, it gained a dedicated following for its unique combination of complex mechanical detailing and inclusive building techniques, eventually becoming a cult classic among builders who appreciated its departure from the blockier vehicles of the mid-2000s.
