Where it came from
The Thunder Blazer, released under the set number 7420-1, belongs to the short-lived LEGO Racers 'Xalax' subtheme introduced in 2001. This line was characterized by its unconventional aesthetic, featuring rounded, futuristic vehicle designs intended to appeal to a younger demographic interested in high-speed, arcade-style play. The set was designed as a self-contained racing unit, utilizing a pull-back motor mechanism that allowed it to travel across flat surfaces with significant momentum.
The design philosophy behind the Xalax series focused on durability and ease of assembly, departing from the standard brick-built construction common in other LEGO sets of the era. By incorporating specialized molded chassis components and streamlined body shells, the designers aimed for a aesthetic reminiscent of science fiction rally cars. While the series provided an accessible entry point for children, it received a lukewarm reception from adult collectors who favored traditional building techniques, leading to its limited production run.
