Where it came from
The LEGO Star Wars TIE Defender set, released in 2010, originated from the expanded universe of the Star Wars franchise, specifically drawing inspiration from the flight simulator video games where the ship first appeared. As a rare inclusion in the LEGO catalog, the set represented an effort to capture a vessel known for its unique tri-wing design, which diverged significantly from the traditional TIE fighter aesthetic favored in earlier sets.
The design focused on maintaining the complex geometry of the Defender while ensuring stability for play. Upon its release, it was noted by collectors for its niche appeal and the inclusion of unique minifigures, reflecting a period where the LEGO Group expanded its reach into deep-cut source material beyond the core cinematic trilogy to satisfy dedicated fans.
