Where it came from
The LEGO Treasure Chest, set 1695-1, was released in 1996 as part of a promotional series often bundled with other sets or sold as a small polybag item. It served as a standalone accessory pack, designed to provide builders with a quintessential seafaring element: a molded plastic chest that could open and close, filled with classic gold-colored coin tiles.
This set fits into the broader history of LEGO design, which transitioned in the 1990s from basic brick-built structures to more specialized, thematic elements. The design team focused on playability and detail, aiming to give children a tangible reward for their adventure-themed sets. While it lacked the complexity of larger builds, it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors who appreciate the iconic utility and simplicity of early specialized LEGO pieces.
