Where it came from
The Treasure Chest Coin Bank, released under set number 851936-1, was introduced by the LEGO Group as part of a series of functional promotional items. It was designed to resemble a classic wooden pirate chest, utilizing a combination of standard plastic building elements and specialized hinge pieces to create a storage vessel that could be built by the user. The aesthetic was heavily inspired by the enduring popularity of the LEGO Pirates theme, which debuted in 1989 and has remained a cornerstone of the company's historical portfolio.
This set was marketed primarily as a desk accessory or a functional gift for younger builders, emphasizing the utility of LEGO beyond pure construction play. By incorporating a coin slot in the lid, the design invited users to repurpose their building experience into a practical object for saving. While it did not feature the complex assembly of larger display sets, it was received as a charming entry-level product that captured the adventurous spirit of earlier, more extensive pirate-themed releases.
