Where it came from
Released in 2021 as part of the LEGO Ninjago Seabound subtheme, the Water Dragon set was designed to anchor the narrative arc focused on the character Nya. The set was conceived to showcase the elemental connection between the ninja and the deep-sea setting, featuring a highly articulated dragon build that mimics aquatic movement through flexible joints and a specialized fin aesthetic.
The model was designed by the LEGO Ninjago team to provide a significant build experience for younger fans while incorporating complex Technic elements for structural integrity. Upon its release, it was well-received by the building community for its unique color palette—transitioning from traditional Ninjago hues to deep blues and teals—and its distinct departure from the more common fire or lightning-themed dragon sets in the long-running series.
