Where it came from
The LEGO Duplo Water Animals set, numbered 2663-1, was released in the late 1990s as part of the broader Duplo range designed specifically for toddlers. During this era, the brand expanded its focus on educational play, introducing animal-themed sets to help children develop fine motor skills and recognize common aquatic creatures through simplified, chunky, and durable plastic forms.
The design of these figures prioritized safety and ease of handling for small hands, eschewing intricate details in favor of recognizable silhouettes and bold colors. As a foundational set in the Duplo line, it was received as a reliable staple for early childhood development, reflecting the company's long-standing strategy of using familiar biological themes to encourage imaginative play and spatial learning.
