Where it came from
The Cheshire Cat character card, numbered 71 in The First Chapter, was released in 2023 as part of the inaugural set of the Disney Lorcana trading card game. Developed by Ravensburger, the game was designed to blend traditional trading card mechanics with Disney's vast intellectual property, aiming to appeal to both seasoned tabletop gamers and collectors. The card serves as a character unit within the game's strategic framework, utilizing the character's signature elusive and mischievous nature from the 1951 film Alice in Wonderland to influence gameplay flow.
The artistic direction for this card focuses on the iconic, surreal aesthetic established in the original animation. The illustrators sought to capture the character's shifting presence, emphasizing his wide grin and capacity for trickery. Upon its release, the set was met with significant interest from the gaming community, as it marked the first time Disney characters were featured in a dedicated competitive card game format, with the Cheshire Cat quickly becoming a recognizable piece of the game's foundational card pool.
