Where it came from
The Merlin card from the Hyperia City set emerged during the mid-1990s, a period defined by the rapid expansion of collectible card games that blended futuristic urban themes with mythological archetypes. This specific character was conceived to anchor the mystical side of the Hyperia narrative, serving as a bridge between the set's gritty cybernetic aesthetic and high-fantasy lore.
The character design was brought to life by the set's lead illustrators, who sought to recontextualize the classic wizard trope within a dystopian landscape. By incorporating neon-integrated robes and digital sigils, they aimed for a visual harmony between magic and technology. Upon its release, the card became a focal point for players due to its complex special abilities, which shifted the strategic meta of the Hyperia City tabletop game significantly.
