Where it came from
A Real Handful was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth Un-set produced by Wizards of the Coast. Designed to explore the humorous and boundary-pushing potential of Magic: The Gathering, the set was conceived to blend traditional game mechanics with 'silver-bordered' design sensibilities, though Unfinity moved to a permanent black-bordered status. The card specifically leans into the set's theme of circus and space-carnival aesthetics, offering a whimsical take on gameplay interactions that would be impossible in standard competitive formats.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, whose artwork often emphasizes dynamic character action and vibrant color palettes suited for the high-fantasy and sci-fi aesthetic of the Magic multiverse. In the context of the game's design, A Real Handful serves as a classic 'Un-card' that uses physical presence and player interaction as its core mechanic, reflecting the developers' goal of creating lighthearted, tabletop-focused experiences that prioritize communal laughter over mechanical optimization.
