Where it came from
Gobsmacked was released in 2022 as part of Unfinity, the fourth Un-set produced by Wizards of the Coast. Designed for casual play, Un-sets are known for integrating mechanics that break standard game rules, often incorporating humor and novelty elements that are not permitted in tournament-sanctioned formats. This particular card was conceived as part of the set's broader initiative to include 'attractions,' a mechanical innovation meant to represent a futuristic carnival or amusement park theme.
The card was illustrated by Sergey Glushakov, who utilized a vibrant, whimsical aesthetic consistent with the sci-fi carnival theme pervasive throughout the set. Within the design philosophy of Unfinity, the art is intended to be eye-catching and slightly surreal, leaning into the lighthearted nature of silver-bordered or acorn-stamped cards. Upon release, the set was noted for its departure from traditional Magic: The Gathering tropes, with players generally receiving the inclusion of these non-competitive, amusement-themed cards as a deliberate shift toward more experimental, interactive gameplay experiences.
