Where it came from
Abeyance was originally printed as a rare card in the 1997 Weatherlight expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This version, featured in the 1997 World Championship Decks, is a reprint of the card as it appeared in the deck piloted by Jakub Slemr, who won the 1997 World Championship in Seattle. These World Championship decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a commemorative product, allowing players to own exact replicas of the decks played by the top professionals of that year.
The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who provided numerous illustrations for the game during its early years. Designed as a white instant card, Abeyance was created to disrupt opponent gameplay by preventing them from casting spells and activating abilities during their turn. Within the context of the 1997 competitive meta, the card was highly regarded for its utility in tempo-based strategies and remained a staple of professional play for years due to its unique ability to silence an opponent during a critical window.
