Where it came from
About Face was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set focused on the complex, artifact-heavy lore of the artificer Urza. The card itself represents a red instant spell designed to mechanically reflect the chaotic and aggressive nature of the set’s color philosophy.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the game's early history who set much of the visual tone for the series. Rush’s design for the card emphasizes a sudden, jarring shift in creature power and toughness, a clever interpretation of the card's function that was well-received by players looking for high-risk, high-reward tactical options in red-aligned decks.
