Provenance

Where it came from

Abyssal Hunter was released in October 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage served as the first set in the Mirage block and was notable for being the first expansion designed with a cohesive, Africa-inspired aesthetic, moving away from the more generic high-fantasy themes of earlier releases.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Quinton Hoover, whose distinctive, fluid style was a hallmark of Magic's early years. His depiction of the creature reflects the thematic focus of the set, which introduced the 'flanking' keyword and emphasized the dangers of deep-water environments. While not a competitive staple in professional play, the card remains a recognized piece of 1990s card design, valued by enthusiasts for its role in the game’s formative era.
