Where it came from
Coral Fighters was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was notable for introducing the phased mechanic, which allowed cards to temporarily blink out of existence. The expansion was designed to reflect a tropical, desert-themed plane, moving away from the European fantasy aesthetics that dominated earlier releases in the game's history.
The artwork for Coral Fighters was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, who was a foundational artist for Magic: The Gathering during its early years. Maddocks utilized a distinct, creature-focused style that leaned into organic and sometimes unsettling character designs. Within the competitive landscape, the card was received as a niche utility creature, primarily utilized for its ability to block effectively in water-themed environments rather than as a centerpiece for tournament-level play.
