Abzan Banner

The Abzan Banner was released in 2014 as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Within the game's lore, the card represents a ceremonial standard used by the Abzan Houses, a faction residing on the desert plane of Tarkir that values endurance, ancestral tradition, and the protection of their trade routes. The design team created this series of banners to provide players with both color-fixing mana ramp and a late-game card-draw utility, reflecting the mechanical theme of the set's three-color clans.

The artwork for this specific card was commissioned from artist Johannes Voss, who sought to capture the rigid, militaristic, and gold-trimmed aesthetic of the Abzan culture. By featuring the clan's sigil prominently, the illustration emphasizes the faction's institutional strength. Upon release, the card was received as a functional staple for limited play formats, serving as a reliable utility piece that helped players navigate the complex mana requirements of the three-color draft environment typical of the Khans of Tarkir block.
