Where it came from
Acquisition Octopus was released in 2022 as part of the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty set for Magic: The Gathering. This set marked a significant return to the Japanese-inspired plane of Kamigawa, reimagined through a cyberpunk aesthetic that blended traditional folklore with high-tech futurism. The creature design reflects this thematic fusion, presenting a biomechanical cephalopod integrated into the neon-drenched urban environment of Towashi City.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the octopus in a dynamic pose emphasizing its role as a technological scout or scavenger within the setting. By incorporating the reconfigure ability, a mechanic introduced in this set to represent modular equipment, the card serves as both a creature and an upgrade for other units. It was generally well-received by players for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to the set's distinct visual identity.
