Where it came from
Additive Evolution was released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion Secrets of Strixhaven, a set designed to showcase the magical university of Strixhaven. The card embodies the flavor of the Quandrix college, which focuses on the intersection of mathematics and nature, represented here by the growth of a creature via counters.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Lucas Graciano, who aimed to visualize the concept of mathematical growth manifesting as biological expansion. The design intent behind this sorcery was to provide players with a functional green-blue card that mirrors the scholarly yet untamed energy of the set's setting, emphasizing the synergy between academic theory and physical power.
