Where it came from
Aerie Worshippers was released in 2014 as part of the Born of the Gods set, the second expansion in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the mythological inspirations of Ancient Greece, specifically focusing on the intersection of mortal devotion and the pantheon of gods. This card serves as a mechanical representation of the set's central 'inspired' keyword, which triggers abilities whenever a permanent becomes untapped, reflecting the thematic growth of characters through prayer and service.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, an artist known for his contribution of numerous iconic fantasy illustrations to the game. Baga’s aesthetic for this piece captures the ethereal, avian-themed aesthetic of the religious sect residing in the mountainous regions of the Theros plane. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, mid-level addition to the white-aligned limited environments, valued primarily for its defensive capabilities and its synergy with the mechanics that defined the block's draft landscape.
