Where it came from
Aether Gust was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in July 2019. Designed as a versatile blue instant, it was intended to provide players with a strategic answer to aggressive red or green threats in the Standard format, reflecting the set's goal of balancing color interaction and providing functional utility cards for competitive play.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who captured the fluid, elemental nature of the spell through a dynamic, gust-like visual motif. Upon its release, the card received significant recognition within the Magic: The Gathering community for its efficiency and power level, quickly becoming a staple inclusion in sideboards across multiple formats due to its ability to manipulate the tempo of a game by resetting a threat to the top of an opponent's library.
