Where it came from
Aether Helix was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, specifically within the Mystical Archive subset. The card was designed to represent the intersection of two distinct magical disciplines, embodying the dual-colored philosophy of the Prismari college, which emphasizes artistic expression and elemental manipulation. It serves as a mechanical bridge, allowing players to bridge the gap between aggressive spellcasting and resource management.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a vivid, sweeping visual language to convey the chaotic yet controlled nature of the spell. By depicting the swirling Aether in a dynamic, ethereal form, the design aims to evoke the feeling of high-level sorcery found within the halls of Strixhaven University. Upon its release, it was noted for its utility in limited formats and its striking aesthetic, which aligned with the academic yet fantastical theme of the expansion.
