Provenance

Where it came from

The Aethertide Whale was released as part of the Aether Revolt set in early 2017, a pivotal expansion in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse that explored the steampunk-inspired world of Kaladesh. This particular iteration, marked as a promotional card with the collector number 27s, was distributed through the Friday Night Magic event program to encourage local game store participation.

The illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme, who utilized a moody, ethereal aesthetic to capture the creature's bioluminescent majesty as it navigates the skies of Kaladesh. His design sought to emphasize the fluidity and scale of the whale, a task that resonated with players who valued the card for its distinct visual presence and its role as a representative of the set's innovation-themed narrative.
