Where it came from
Agent of Masks was originally released in the 2006 Guildpact expansion, set within the urban, gothic cityscape of Ravnica. Designed as a key card for the Orzhov Syndicate, it reflects the faction's signature 'extort' philosophy—a combination of white and black mana mechanics that drains resources from opponents to bolster the caster. The artwork by Kev Walker captures the eerie, ghostly aesthetic of the Orzhov spirits, emphasizing the oppressive nature of the Syndicate's afterlife bureaucracy.
The 2017 Modern Masters reprint brought this card into a curated draft environment, updating its frame to the modern Magic: The Gathering card design. By appearing in this set, Agent of Masks was introduced to a new generation of players, cementing its status as a classic piece of Orzhov design. The card remains a notable example of how thematic mechanics—taxing opponents through recurring life-loss effects—are integrated into the visual storytelling of the game.
