Provenance

Where it came from

Agent of Stromgald was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set followed the Ice Age expansion, continuing the narrative of the frozen continent of Terisiare and the resurgence of the dark forces of Lim-Dûl. The card captures the brutal aesthetic of the period, depicting a member of the Order of Stromgald, a sect serving the necromancer Lim-Dûl during the Ice Age era.

The artwork was provided by Alan Rabinowitz, who contributed several pieces to the game during the mid-nineties. His design for the Agent focuses on the grim, high-fantasy soldier archetype prevalent in early Magic illustrations, utilizing a stark, textured style that defined the visual language of the Ice Age block. While the card is a common and mechanically straightforward creature, it remains a notable piece of the game's early lore for collectors focused on the thematic expansion of the Phyrexian-adjacent factions.
