Agent of the Iron Throne

Agent of the Iron Throne was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting into the multiplayer Commander format. The card serves as a background enchantment, a specific mechanical cycle introduced in this set that allows players to customize their legendary commander by pairing them with an origin or persona, reflecting the character-building depth of tabletop RPGs.

The card was illustrated by artist Billy Christian, who leaned into the dark, manipulative aesthetic associated with the Iron Throne, the shadowy organization from the Baldur’s Gate saga. The artwork emphasizes the theme of sacrifice and political maneuvering, depicting the calculated influence required to ascend the throne. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on aristocrat-style decks, which revolve around sacrificing creatures for incremental gain, as its ability triggers whenever a permanent you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield.
