Where it came from
Agent of the Shadow Thieves was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. The set was designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem, specifically focusing on the iconic city of Baldur’s Gate. This card serves as a 'Background' enchantment, a mechanical cycle introduced in the set that allows players to customize their commander by providing a persistent thematic and functional boost.
The artwork was illustrated by Livia Prima, who utilized a dark, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the clandestine nature of the Shadow Thieves, a notorious criminal syndicate in the D&D setting. The design sought to emphasize the card's mechanical role as a rogue-aligned support, receiving positive feedback from players for its utility in Commander decks that benefit from aggressive creature buffing and life gain.
