Aggravated Assault was originally released in the 2001 Onslaught expansion, serving as a powerful enchantment that allows players to take additional combat phases at the cost of mana. In 2017, it was reprinted as part of the Amonkhet Invocations, a series of premium, Masterpiece-style cards found in the Amonkhet block. These cards were designed to evoke the aesthetic of Egyptian-inspired artifacts, featuring unique frame borders and distinct, ornate iconography that departed significantly from the standard Magic: The Gathering card frame.

The artwork for this specific version was commissioned from artist Greg Opalinski, who utilized a dark, visceral style to capture the card's theme of relentless combat. By emphasizing sharp, angular forms and a heavy, metallic visual texture, the design aimed to mirror the harsh, unforgiving nature of the plane of Amonkhet. Upon its release, the card drew a polarized reception from the player base, as many collectors appreciated the high-concept visual overhaul while some traditionalists found the unconventional, stylized text font and border design difficult to read during gameplay.
