Where it came from
Agitator Ant was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically within the Timeless Wisdom preconstructed deck. This set was designed to tie into the mechanics of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion, which focused heavily on creature-based themes and unique keyword abilities. The card serves as a thematic piece that encourages forced combat, reflecting the chaotic, monstrous ecosystem of the Ikoria setting.
The artwork for Agitator Ant was illustrated by Wisnu Tan. The design intent was to capture the aggressive, swarm-like nature of the creature while maintaining the visual identity of the Mutate-centric expansion. Upon release, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for multiplayer Commander formats, valued by players for its ability to goad opposing creatures and accelerate game states by incentivizing combat among opponents.
