Card face

What it does

At the beginning of your end step, each player may put two +1/+1 counters on a creature they control. Goad each creature that had counters put on it this way. (Until your next turn, those creatures attack each combat if able and attack a player other than you if able.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Agitator Ant was released in 2022 as part of the Commander deck collection accompanying the Streets of New Capenna set. The card was designed to support the 'goad' mechanic, a strategic tool in multiplayer Magic: The Gathering that forces opponents to attack each other rather than the controller of the card, fitting the set's thematic focus on the cutthroat, mob-run art deco city of New Capenna.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. Known for his dynamic style in the fantasy genre, Kieryluk leaned into the insectoid, bio-mechanical aesthetic of the set to depict the ant as a disruptive force on the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to escalate the pace of multiplayer games, effectively breaking stalemates by compelling aggressive play from all participants.
