Where it came from
Akal Pakal, First Among Equals was released in 2023 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The card was designed to support the set's focus on deep-sea exploration and Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetics, functioning as a legendary creature that rewards players for interacting with artifacts. It fits into the broader narrative of Ixalan, a plane characterized by its ancient ruins, hidden civilizations, and factions vying for power within the subterranean depths.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Jason Felix, who utilized a vivid color palette to highlight the character’s regal, aquatic appearance. The design reflects the set's thematic blend of mythic exploration and mechanical synergy. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on commander format deck-building, particularly for its ability to generate card advantage through equipment and artifact strategies.
