What it does
At the beginning of each player's end step, if an artifact entered the battlefield under your control this turn, look at the top two cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the other into your graveyard.
"These lost children of Aclazotz are misguided, but perhaps there can be reconciliation of our ideals without war."

Where it came from
Akal Pakal, First Among Equals was released as part of the special promotional offerings for the 2023 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The card is designed to represent a legendary figure from the deep-earth civilization of Orazca, leaning into the set's aesthetic of Mesoamerican-inspired fantasy and subterranean adventure. Mechanically, it emphasizes themes of artifact synergy, reflecting the character's role as a master engineer or scholar within the set's lore.
The card features distinct illustrative work typical of the promo variants in the Ixalan cycle, which often utilize bold framing or extended art to distinguish them from standard set cards. These promos were distributed through organized play events, designed to encourage community participation by providing players with visually unique versions of popular legendary creatures. The reception among the player base has been focused on its utility in Commander formats, where its ability to generate value through artifact-focused gameplay remains a consistent point of interest.
