Akoum Hellhound

Akoum Hellhound was released in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising. Designed as a common creature card, it was crafted to support the set's landfall mechanic, a thematic hallmark of the Zendikar plane that rewards players for playing land cards. The card serves as an aggressive low-cost creature, reflecting the dangerous, shifting landscapes of the Akoum region, a continent known for its volcanic activity and jagged, mountainous terrain.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who emphasized the creature’s elemental, magma-infused nature. In the context of the game's meta-environment during its release, it became a staple in aggressive red-based decks, particularly in the Limited and Standard formats. It is widely regarded as an efficient, high-impact early-game threat that effectively captures the perilous and unpredictable flavor of the Zendikar setting.
