Where it came from
Roiling Vortex was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed as an aggressive red enchantment intended to punish players who cast spells without paying their mana costs and to provide a consistent source of damage during the upkeep phase, reflecting the chaotic and dangerous nature of the Zendikar plane.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Dmitry Burmak, who focused on the turbulent, unstable magical landscapes characteristic of the setting. Upon its release, the card saw immediate competitive adoption, particularly in eternal formats like Modern and Legacy, where its ability to restrict free-spell strategies made it a staple utility piece in sideboard configurations.
