Where it came from
Akroma's Devoted was released in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering set Legions, a unique expansion consisting entirely of creature cards. This mechanical focus was a deliberate shift by Wizards of the Coast, designed to emphasize the theme of tribal warfare and constant engagement on the battlefield. As a card tied to the lore of the iconic legend Akroma, Angel of Wrath, it reflects the religious and militaristic fervor surrounding her character within the Phage and Akroma storyline arc.
The card features artwork by Bradley Williams, whose illustration captures the fervent, almost zealous nature of Akroma's followers. The design intent was to provide a thematic connection between the angel's battlefield presence and her devotees, granting a defensive bonus to other creatures while maintaining a focus on the White mana color identity. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility piece, appreciated by players drafting the Legions set for its ability to bolster white-aligned creature strategies.
