Where it came from
Alesha, Who Smiles at Death was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering universe in the 2015 Fate Reforged set, representing a pivotal character from the Mardu Horde on the plane of Tarkir. As a legendary human warrior, she is notable for her canonical identity as a trans woman, a detail integrated into the lore through the creative writing team at Wizards of the Coast. This specific printing, numbered 118, originates from the 2022 Dominaria United Commander release, which featured reprints of iconic legendary creatures to support the set's focus on historic figures.
The card’s design, characterized by its ability to reanimate small creatures from the graveyard, reflects the aggressive and recursive nature of the Mardu color identity. The artwork for this specific iteration maintains the visual legacy of the character, emphasizing her status as a daring battle leader. Upon her initial release, the card received widespread acclaim within the Commander community, not only for her mechanical utility as a graveyard-focused commander but also for the positive representation she provided to players within the LGBTQ+ community.
