What it does
Eighteen-year-old Alex Borteh came on strong in the last half of the 2000—2001 Pro Tour™ season. He posted an impressive Top 8 finish at U.S. Nationals and followed that up by coming within one match of winning this year's Worlds. The soon-to-be Ohio State University freshman played a monoblue combo deck that he liked to call "Da Folk." This deck wins by using Opposition and Static Orb to establish a lock down while legions of Merfolk overrun opponents' immobilized defenses.

Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were a pre-constructed product line released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the top players at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This specific card represents Alex Borteh’s deck from the 2001 tournament held in Toronto. These decks were intended to give fans an opportunity to play with exact replicas of the competitive decks used by professional players, featuring gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures, making them non-tournament legal but highly educational for players studying the meta-game of the era.
The card captures the essence of the 'Fires' archetype, a dominant deck design of the early 2000s that utilized the card Fires of Yavimaya to grant creatures haste. The design of the deck and the accompanying biographical card reflect the competitive environment of the time, where aggressive red-green strategies were at the forefront of the Pro Tour scene. The cards in this set were intended to bridge the gap between casual players and the professional circuit, providing a snapshot of the mechanical ingenuity that defined competitive play during that cycle.
