What it does
Eighteen-year-old Alex Borteh came on strong in the last half of the 2000—2001 Pro Tour™ season. He posted an impressive Top 8 finish at U.S. Nationals and followed that up by coming within one match of winning this year's Worlds. The soon-to-be Ohio State University freshman played a monoblue combo deck that he liked to call "Da Folk." This deck wins by using Opposition and Static Orb to establish a lock down while legions of Merfolk overrun opponents' immobilized defenses.

Where it came from
The 2001 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to experience the high-level strategies used by professional competitors at the Magic: The Gathering World Championships. This specific card represents a replica of the deck piloted by Alex Borteh, who utilized a 'Domain' strategy to secure his place in the top ranks of the tournament. The set included exact card lists, though the cards themselves featured distinct back designs and gold-foil signatures to distinguish them from standard-issue trading cards.
The design of the 2001 World Championship series focused on transparency and accessibility, allowing casual players to dismantle and study the deck lists that defined the professional meta-game of the era. The cards were illustrated by the original artists of the 1990s and early 2000s Magic library, maintaining visual consistency with the base sets while utilizing the unique gold-bordered aesthetic that became the hallmark of the product line. These decks are now collected as historical artifacts of competitive gaming history rather than for their utility in modern tournament play.
